Tweet This Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (June 19, 2012) -- Roughneck Pest Control, one of the most trusted exterminators in Philadelphia, is helping residents of Levittown and the surrounding communities protect their most valuable assets from termites.

Termites can feed on a variety of potential food sources in and around a property. These can include dead trees, stored or waste timbers, and firewood. A termite infestation may seem harmless at first, but if left unchecked for a period of time, it can lead to the destruction of the property.

Perhaps the worst part of a termite infestation is the fact that many insurance companies do not cover it. This is why homeowners should not wait until the situation escalates to an even bigger problem. The moment a termite infestation is suspected, a Philadelphia exterminator from Roughneck Pest Control must be called in to resolve the termite problem immediately.

Roughneck Pest Control has been helping homeowners fight for their right to a termite-free home since 2010. Like all of the best exterminator in Philadelphia, Roughneck Pest Control is committed to providing proven pest control solutions and outstanding customer service. Rain storms kill at least 37 in Beijing

In this photo provided by China's Xinhua News Agency, streets are waterlogged in Gaoqiao township of Dongxing District in Neijiang, southwest China's Sichuan Province Sunday, July 22, 2012. On Sunday, the government warned of more storms over the following 24 hours for China's northeast, the port city of Tianjin east of Beijing, Inner Mongolia in the north, Sichuan and neighboring Yunnan province, and Guangdong and Hainan provinces in the southeast. (AP Photo/Xinhua, Lan Zitao) NO SALES

(AP) ? Officials have raised the death toll to at least 37 in the heaviest rainstorm to hit Beijing in six decades, and dozens of other storm deaths have been reported elsewhere in China.

The rain Saturday night knocked down trees in Beijing and trapped cars and buses in waist-deep water in some areas. A statement from the city government late Sunday said 25 people drowned, six were killed when houses collapsed, one was hit by lightning and five were electrocuted by fallen power lines.

The official China Daily newspaper reported Monday that rain and flooding caused damages of at least 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion), with 60,000 people evacuated from their homes.

The official Globe Times said Monday that it was the heaviest rainstorm in the capital in 61 years.

It was the heaviest on record in Fangshan district in the southwest of the city, which received 460 millimeters (18.4 inches) of rain Saturday, according to the weather bureau. The agency also said suburban Pinggu district got 100.3 millimeters (4 inches) of rain in one hour.

A flash flood in Fangshan stranded 104 primary school students and nine teachers at a military training site, Xinhua said. They were taken to safety.

Elsewhere, six people were killed by rain-triggered landslides in Sichuan province in the west, Xinhua News Agency said, citing disaster officials.

Four people died in Shanxi province in the north when their truck was swept away by a rain-swollen river. In neighboring Shaanxi province, state media said at least eight people died and 17 were missing after heavy rains hit.

China suffers flooding and dozens of storm-related deaths every summer during its rainy season, but such a heavy downpour in relatively dry Beijing is unusual.

The capital's skies were clear Monday, with traffic back to normal. The city's main airport was operating normally after hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the weekend.

Larkin, Santo inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- Barry Larkin lost it before he even started. Vicki Santo never wavered as she honored her late husband, Ron.

Baseball's highest honor always seems to leave a special impression on those directly involved.

Larkin, the former star shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds, and Ron Santo, a standout third baseman for the Chicago Cubs and later a beloved broadcaster for the team, were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

After wiping away tears as his teenage daughter sang the national anthem, Larkin began a litany of thank-yous to the important people who helped him along his journey, none more important than his mom, Shirley, and father, Robert, who were seated in the first row.

"If we were going to do something, we were going to do it right," Larkin said. "Growing up, you challenged me. That was so instrumental."

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Larkin was a two-sport star at Moeller High School and thought he might become a pro football player after accepting a scholarship to play college ball at Michigan for Bo Schembechler. That changed in a hurry.

"He (Schembechler) redshirted me my freshman year and told me that he was going to allow me just to play baseball," Larkin said. "Occasionally, I'd call him while I was playing in the big leagues and told him that was the best decision he made as a football coach. He didn't like that too much."

Drafted fourth by the Reds in 1985, despite playing just 41 games his first year Larkin finished seventh in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1986.

Two years later, Larkin was an All-Star with a .296 average, 91 runs scored, 32 doubles and 40 stolen bases. And with a host of older players to guide him -- Eric Davis, Ron Oester, Buddy Bell, player-manager Pete Rose, a Cincinnati native, slugger Tony Perez, and even star shortstop Dave Concepcion, the man he would replace -- Larkin's major league career quickly took off.

"I played with some monumental figures in the game," said Larkin, who was introduced to baseball by his dad at the age of 5. "They helped me through some very rough times as a player."

After giving special thanks in Spanish to the Latin players that also helped mold him, Larkin heaped special praise on Rose and Concepcion.

"I wouldn't be in the big leagues if it weren't for Pete," Larkin said, eliciting a stirring applause from the fans, two of whom were holding a placard inscribed with "Cincinnati's hometown heroes, Larkin and Rose."

"And Dave Concepcion, understanding that I was gunning for his job, understanding that I was from Cincinnati, he spent countless hours with me preparing me for the game," Larkin said. "I idolized Davey Concepcion as a kid. Thank you, my idol. My inclusion in the Hall of Fame is the ultimate validation. I want to thank you all for helping me along the way."

Larkin, who played his entire 19-year career with the Reds, retired after the 2004 season with a .295 career average, 2,340 hits, 1,329 runs scored and 379 stolen bases.

Ron Santo didn't live to experience the day he always dreamed of. Plagued by health problems, he died Dec. 3, 2010, at the age of 70. His long battle with diabetes cost him both legs below the knees, but he ultimately died of complications from bladder cancer.

A member of the Chicago Cubs organization for the better part of five decades as a player (1960-74) and then beloved broadcaster (1990-2010), Santo was selected by the Veterans Committee in December, exactly one year after his death.

Vicki Santo said she cried a lot while practicing her speech. Her poise was remarkable when it counted most.

"It just feels right, a perfect ending to a remarkable journey," Vicki Santo said. "Ron left an awful hole for many of us today. This is not a sad day. This is a great day. I'm certain that Ronnie is celebrating right now."

So, too were his beloved Cubs. They paid a tribute of their own to Santo, clicking their heels as they jumped over the third-base line to start the bottom of the first inning at St. Louis.

In 15 major league seasons, all but one with the Cubs, Santo was one of the top third basemen in major league history. He compiled a .277 batting average, had 2,254 hits, 1,331 RBIs and 365 doubles in 2,243 games. He also was a tireless fundraiser for juvenile diabetes, raising more than $65 million.

Santo fought serious medical problems after he retired as a player. He underwent surgery on his eyes, heart and bladder after doctors discovered cancer. He also had surgery more than a dozen times on his legs before they were amputated below the knees -- the right one in 2001 and the left a year later.

As a broadcaster, Santo was known for unabashedly rooting for the Cubs, a trait that endeared him to fans who never saw him play.

"I want you to know that he loved you so much, and he would be grateful that you came here to share this with him," Vicki Santo said to the fans. "He fought the good fight, and though he's no longer here we need to find a cure (for juvenile diabetes). He felt he had been put here for that reason. He believed in his journey. He believed in his cause. We can't let him down."

Two inductees were honored Saturday in a ceremony at Doubleday Field. Former catcher Tim McCarver received the Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions in broadcasting, while Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun was given the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for sports writing.

For the love of basketball; former Port Angeles coach joining Hall of Fame

PORT ANGELES ? The Sinnes family revolves around a basketball.

Head of family Lee Sinnes is a former all-state high school and Hall of Fame college basketball player, and a longtime high school coach.

He coached his son and future son-in-law in high school. Both of his daughters played high school basketball.

His son and son-in-law now both coach high school basketball, and coach against each other in the same league.

And his wife, Sandy, well ? she lives and breathes basketball.

?We are both crazy for basketball,? Sandy Sinnes said about her and her husband.

It was a match made in heaven for the Port Angeles High School sweethearts.

Lee was the star basketball player, earning all-state honors his senior year in 1966.

Sandy Olsen never missed a game her boyfriend played in. She even followed Lee to all of his road games.

?His parents were so good to take me to all the away games,? she said.

Lee Sinnes went on to have a four-year Hall of Fame career at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma as a 6-foot-5 forward.

Sandy, also a PLU student, was there at every game.

They married during their junior year.

?I married the whole basketball team,? Sandy said. ?All of the players came over to our house.?

Becomes a coach

After leaving college, Lee coached high school basketball for 37 years, 24 as a head coach. And all but six of those years were at Port Angeles.

Sandy was there for almost every game.

Lee and Sandy named their second child, a girl, after one of their favorite high school teams.

Lee, who witnessed many changes in the sport over the years ? including introduction of a shot clock, adding a 3-point line and the start of Title IX as girls were given the opportunity to play sports ? will be inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Thursday.

Sandy will be there.

?I owe my success to my wife,? Lee Sinnes said. ?A coach is away from his family a lot, and she supported me the whole way.?

Sandy admits that it was a big change when her young husband first became a coach.

??I married a basketball player, not a basketball coach,? Sandy said.

But Sandy quickly adjusted to being a coach's wife.

?I went to all his games, and I even kept score the first few years,? she said.

Sandy, who should get an assist at Thursday's Hall of Fame banquet, was pregnant with the couple's second child during the fateful 1975 season when Lee was coaching Mark Morris of Longview as the Monarchs made a run at state.

It was his fifth year of coaching when an underrated Mark Morris team shocked a lot of people by capturing second in state to Cleveland.

?We had seven seniors on the team but none of them went on to play college basketball,? Sinnes said.

?They were intelligent, and they understood what we wanted to do.?

During the state playoffs, an area newspaper wrote that Mark Morris was making ?a Cinderella run at state.?

Lee Sinnes told the team that he and Sandy would name their second child after the team, Cinderella, if it was a girl.

And that's how Cindy, now 37, received her name.

Another one of Sinnes' all-time favorite teams was the 1997 Port Angeles squad, which also made a good state run.

That Roughriders team still has a school record of 22 consecutive wins.

It also claimed seventh place in state, and along the way beat Lincoln High School of Tacoma ? one of the most talented teams in state ? by three points for the West Central District championship.

?That was probably the most well-played high school game I have coached,? Sinnes said.

?I had some good players on that team. The seniors were on the team since 1995 as sophomores when James Madison was a senior.?

Madison probably was the best player Sinnes has coached, and could be the top male player ever for the Riders.

Madison still holds the boys school career scoring record but was surpassed overall by his little sister, Jessica, who now owns the all-time career scoring record at Port Angeles.

The Madison family is one of the many Port Angeles clans that have enriched Sinnes' life.

?Coaching local families has been a real award for me,? he said.

And no family has dominated Port Angeles hoops in recent years more than the Madisons.

First there was Mike Madison, the uncle of James, Jon, Jake and Jessica Madison.

Enough players for their own basketball team.

Sinnes coached Mike back in 1976. Mike Madison was all-state for the Riders, and later All-American for Concordia University in Portland.

James was all-state in 1995 and went on to play at Cleveland State.

Jon took his prep all-state status to University of Anchorage Alaska, and a few years later sister Jessica followed him to the same school.

Sinnes coached all five of the Madisons, and was able to help coach Jessica when he was a varsity assistant in the girls program late in his career.

Another highlight of Sinnes' career was coaching his son, Matt, who graduated in 2004.

?Coaching my son was very special,? he said.

Another highlight was coaching his future son-in-law and godson, Jason Carrell, in 1991 and '92.

Matt Sinnes currently coaches Puyallup High School basketball while his brother-in-law coaches at Bethel in Spanaway. Both teams play in the 4A South Puget Sound League.

Carrell and Shari Sinnes, Lee and Sandy's oldest daughter, were sweethearts at Port Angeles High School.

Lee and Sandy met Jason's parents through the kids.

Sandy and Rhonda Carrell have been best friends ever since.

And when Jason's father died when he was 15, Lee Sinnes offered to help raise him, and the Sinnes' became his godparents.

That's all to explain about the T-shirts when the Bethel Braves and Puyallup Vikings play each other in basketball.

Talk about stretching the parents' loyalty a little bit.

Rhonda wears a T-shirt that says on front ?Bethel Braves' coach is my son.? On back is the message, ?Puyallup Vikings' coach is my godson.?

Sandy wears a T-shirt that says on front ?Puyallup Vikings' coach is my son.? The back says, you guessed it, ?Bethel Braves' coach is my godson.?

Another interesting twist to the story is that Matt married his co-coach. Well, that was a few years ago when Matt was applying for his first head coaching job at a junior high school in the Bethel school district.

His future wife, Sarah, was applying for the same job.

The school administration couldn't decide between them and named them co-coaches. The rest is history as they say.

And now Sarah is pregnant with the couple's first child.

Lee Sinnes will be introduced at the Hall of Fame banquet by his longtime friend, fellow coach, fellow Hall of Fame inductee and 1964 Port Angeles High School graduate, Dave Denny.

Denny, who made it to the Hall in 2006, will have a lot to say about his old friend.

?It's a huge honor for Lee to be inducted into the Hall,? Denny said.

?It's an honor anytime you're recognized by your peers.

?The reasons he's being inducted is that he's been a great coach for a long period of time. He has coached winning programs at both Mark Morris and Port Angeles.

?He has contributed to his communities.

?But you don't get inducted just for winning.

?Lee has been a positive role model for kids throughout the years.?

And, as in most families, Lee's wife gets the final say.

?I love Lee more now than when we first met,? Sandy said.

?He has been a great father, husband, counselor and friend, and he set a good example for the kids.

?I wouldn't change anything.?

And for the love of basketball, there goes the Sinnes family.

Blue Cruise ? Pleasurable vacations at sea | ArticleBro.com

Imagine wonderful scenery, relaxing atmosphere, fantastic crew and excellent services while at sea; these are just a few words that can be used to describe a blue cruise. Forget about the conventional big cruise ships and let your mind wonder to hand-built ancient design ships called gulets that should elicit thoughts of the first wooden ships but which are now equipped with modern interiors and amenities for your comfort and convenience while out on the clear blue Turkish waters. Now just picture yourself on such a ship visiting ancient sites, undefiled beautiful coves and picturesque sceneries along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world; this is what gulet cruises in Turkey are all about, pleasure beyond the expected!

One of the best things about gulet charters in Turkey is that they are private and the crew on board can modify the trip according to the wishes of the guests onboard. Imagine the pleasure of this convenience whereby you and your family or close friends get to have a hand in deciding what hidden secrets of Turkey aka ?the Cradle of Civilization? you will explore. This and the fact that you will be traveling about without having to pack your bags and move from place to place plus knowing that you can go down to your cabin any time you want while on the trip really makes for total handiness. A blue cruise in Turkey is about total peace of mind while you enjoy visiting a new pleasant spot on every day of your trip.

Also unlike cruise ships, gulets provide sailing capability and thus you now have the opportunity of a lifetime to enjoy savor the trill and tranquility that sailing offers. In gentle winds the gulet?s engine can be switched off thus letting you sail silently on the waters. Now this should make for pure heavenly pleasure especially if you are lying on a sun bed on the foredeck enjoying the sun. The crews will undoubtedly ensure that you are cruising in style thanks to their topnotch hospitality and friendliness plus you will get to enjoy only the best international dishes.

For all these pleasures you must think that a major dent on your finances will be inevitable but you will be pleasantly surprised to know that there are several options which can help to make your blue cruise Turkey a reality. Private charters top the list whereby you can rent a gulet for an entire group and thus get to choose the routes, food and other aspects of your trip. The cabin charter option is suitable for individuals who do not have entire groups to travel with. There is also the budget option and which is commonly available during the low gulet holiday season.

Carolyn's Corner: Buckboard Grille and Grocery | YMCA of the ...

Snow Mountain Ranch has several dining options and one of the favorite for families is the Buckboard Grille and Grocery that is located at the end of the administration building where families check in.? The Grille is decorated with a Studebaker Buckboard, and hence the name ?Buckboard Grille and Grocery?.? Pictures and memorabilia decorate the wall of the Grille and tell the story of the original Just Ranch which The YMCA of the Rockies purchased from the Just family in 1965. With the purchase of the Ranch, the Y inherited a rich history of not just the family, but of the ranching history of Grand County.

Greg Bassett is a seasonal supervisor at the Grille and he says, ?Families find a welcome respite here in the Grille while visiting the Ranch.? We have a diverse menu that includes sandwiches, ice cream, hamburgers and groceries.? The family atmosphere is enhanced by family board games and outdoor seating on our patio and porch.? There are hummingbirds feeding on the porch.? Don?t forget to stop by and try our Snow Mountain Ranch famous milkshakes.? Once you have one you will be back for another.?

Carol Boyce has been manager of the Grille for the past three years.? Carol comes to us at Snow Mountain Ranch with a rich background of working in many different National Parks and from corporate management.?? Carol said that she believes the Buckboard Grille has one of the best and least expensive burgers in Grand County, and having had a burger at the Grille I have to agree with her.? I sampled the milkshakes, which are made the old fashioned way and are topped with a huge glob of whipping cream.? The decadent chocolate shake is addictive and people come in again and again to repeat the delightful experience.

Carol shares, ?I am still impressed when I go on the Grille?s back porch, see the beautiful flowers with the hummingbirds drinking their nectar, and have an awesome view of the Indian Peaks Range and the continental divide.?

The Buckboard Grille also has a small grocery for the campground and other guests.? They stock the store with a variety of food items, condiments, toiletries, medicines, ice and other sundries.? If you are looking for a snack or a drink, this is the place for you.

The Grille has a large screen TV and guests gather at the Grille to watch sports events together. Lisa Linder states, ?It is really fun to come into the Grille when a major sporting event is occurring.? A few weeks ago it was the International Soccer Play Offs and we had international staff and guests from Spain that were all in here rooting for Spain to win.? With the Olympics starting soon, the Grille will be a popular gathering place for guests and staff to enjoy a hamburger and milkshake and sweet potato fries while enjoying the Olympics?.

The Wei and Chen families, originally from Taiwan and now from New York City and Denver, were enjoying a family reunion with three generations here at Snow Mountain Ranch.? They stopped in the Grille to have lunch and some of the family ate in the dining room and the rest of the family was enjoying the outdoor patio.

Another family stopped by the Grille to check their e-mail as the Grille has free Wi-Fi.? They were also enjoying their free cup of coffee, which is available 24 hours a day.

Stop by the Grille on your visit to Snow Mountain Ranch and say hello to our friendly international staff, order a burger and a shake, check your e-mail over a free cup of coffee and then head back to the Program Department to check out all the Ranch activities.

Surprise! Majority of Illegal Immigrant Households Collecting Welfare

Surprise, surprise; Census Bureau data reveals that most?U.S.?families headed by illegal immigrants use taxpayer-funded welfare programs on behalf of their American-born anchor babies.Even before the recession, immigrant households with children used welfare programs at consistently higher rates than natives, according to the extensive census data collected and analyzed by a nonpartisanWashington?D.C.?group dedicated to researching legal and illegal immigration in the?U.S.?The results, published this month in a lengthy?report, are hardly surprising.Basically, the majority of households across the country benefitting from publicly-funded welfare programs are headed by immigrants, both legal and illegal. States where immigrant households with children have the highest welfare use rates are?Arizona?(62%),?Texas,?California?and?New York?with 61% each and?Pennsylvania(59%).The study focused on eight major welfare programs that cost the government $517 billion the year they were examined. They include Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the disabled, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), a nutritional program known as Women, Infants and Children (WIC), food stamps, free/reduced school lunch, public housing and health insurance for the poor (Medicaid).Food assistance and Medicaid are the programs most commonly used by illegal immigrants, mainly on behalf of their American-born children who get automatic citizenship. On the other hand, legal immigrant households take advantage of every available welfare program, according to the study, which attributes it to low education level and resulting low income. The highest rate of welfare recipients come from the?Dominican Republic?(82 %),?Mexico?and?Guatemala?(75%) and?Ecuador?(70%), according to the report, which says welfare use tends to be high for both new arrivals and established residents.

Jonathan Franzen Is the World?s Most Annoying Bird-Watcher

Franzen has written before about how mortifying it is to be a birder. He came out publicly, as far as I can tell, in a 2005 essay for The New Yorker. (It?s behind a pay wall there but available on Oprah?s website. Oprah, honey, you?ve got to stop chasing after someone who thinks he?s too good for you.) He wrote, ?I had a creeping sense of shame about what I was doing. Even as I was learning my gulls and sparrows, I took care, in New York, not to wear my binoculars on a strap but to carry them cupped discreetly in one hand, and if I brought a field guide to the park, I made sure to keep the front cover, which had the word birds in large type, facing inward.?

A roll of the dice: Quantum mechanics researchers show that nature is unpredictable

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Many of the predictions we make in everyday life are vague, and we often get them wrong because we have incomplete information, such as when we predict the weather.

But in quantum mechanics, even if all the information is available, the outcomes of certain experiments generally can't be predicted perfectly beforehand.

This inability to accurately predict the results of experiments in quantum physics has been the subject of a long debate, going back to Einstein and co-workers, about whether quantum mechanics is the best way to predict outcomes.

Researchers from the University of Calgary's Institute for Quantum Information Science along with researchers from the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo and the Eidgen?ssische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Z?rich/Switzerland have published a paper in Physics Review Letters that suggests quantum theory is close to optimal in terms of its predictive power. The research in this paper looks at measurements on members of maximally entangled pairs of photons that are sent into Stern-Gerlach-type apparatus, in which each photon can take one out of two possible paths.

"In our experiment, we show that any theory in which there is significantly less randomness is destined to fail: quantum theory essentially provides the ultimate bound on how predictable the universe is," says Dr. Wolfgang Tittel, associate professor and GDC/AITFIndustrial Research Chair in Quantum Cryptography and Communicationat the University of Calgary.

Dr. Renato Renner, Professor at the ETH in Z?rich adds: "In other words, not only does God 'play dice,' but his dice are fair."

Randomness in quantum theory is one of its key features and is widely known, even outside the scientific community, says Tittel. "Its appeal is its fundamental nature and broad range of implications: knowing the precise configuration of the universe at the big bang would not be sufficient to predict its entire evolution, for example, in contrast to classical theory."

US employers add 80,000 jobs as economy struggles

(AP) ? U.S. employers added only 80,000 jobs in June, a third straight month of weak hiring that shows the economy is still struggling three years after the recession ended.

The unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.2 percent, the Labor Department said in its report Friday.

The economy added an average of just 75,000 jobs a month in the April-June quarter. That's one-third of the 226,000 a month created in the first quarter.

For the first six months of the year, U.S. employers added an average of 150,000 jobs a month. That's fewer than the 161,000 a month for the first half of 2011. And it suggests that three years after the Great Recession officially ended, the job market is weakening instead of strengthening.

"It's a disappointing report," said George Mokrzan, director of economics at Huntington National Bank in Columbus, Ohio. He said the job gains are consistent with sluggish economic growth.

Stock futures fell modestly after the report came out. Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 24 points before the report at 8:30 a.m., and were down 76 points minutes later.

Yields for government bonds sank, an indication that investors were putting money into the Treasury market. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note was 1.59 percent just before the report and 1.56 percent after it came out.

A weaker job market has made consumers less confident. They have pulled back on spending, even though gas prices have plunged.

High unemployment could shift momentum to Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. An Associated Press-GfK poll released last month found that more than half of those surveyed disapproved of President Barack Obama's handling of the economy.

The economy is growing too slowly to lower the unemployment rate. Obama is expected to face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any president since the Great Depression, and the economy is the top issue for many voters.

Dismal June job figures could also prompt the Federal Reserve to take further action to try to boost the economy. The Fed last month downgraded its economic outlook for 2012. It predicted growth of just 1.9 percent to 2.4 percent. And it doesn't expect the unemployment rate to fall much further this year.

Revisions to the job gains in April and May were little changed from the government's previous estimates.

There were some good signs in the report. The average work week grew to 34.5 hours from 34.4 in May, boosting many workers' paychecks. And average hourly pay rose 6 cents to $23.50. Hourly pay has increased 2 percent in the past year and is ahead of inflation, which has fallen in recent months along with gas prices.

About one-third of the jobs gained in June were in temporary services. Manufacturing added 11,000, its ninth straight month of gains.

But growth in factory jobs slowed sharply in the second quarter compared to the first. Health care added 13,000 jobs and financial services gained 5,000. Retailers, transportation firms and government cut jobs.

Who are the Guardians of the Galaxy?

A little over two years from now, Marvel Studios will launch a potential new movie franchise based on an established super hero team in the Marvel Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy.? Chances are, however, that 99% of the American public has never heard of the team or any of their members. In fact, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" are so obscure the new movie will easily be the biggest gamble the studio has ever taken.

One of the obvious reasons the Disney division has had so much success in launching their cinematic universe is the fact that so many of their characters have been enjoyed by multiple generations.? Captain America has been around since the 1940's.? The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and The Avengers since the early 1960's. That's a minimum of forty years of cultural exposure for the company's established characters. Granted, it helps if the movies are actually good (they usually are), but the "brand" awareness of these characters has made marketing Marvel Studios releases easier than Disney or Paramount Pictures (the previous Marvel distributor) would ever admit.? That's not going to be the case with "Guardians."

Just who are the "Guardians of the Galaxy"?? Unfortunately, there's no easy answer.? The moniker was first applied to a group of future super heroes created by Marvel in 1969.? Based in the 31st Century,? these Guardians spend their days battling an evil alien race known as the Badoon.? Their mission eventually saw them visit the 20th Century where the battled the Badoon alongside better known heroes such as Captain America. What happened to that group of "Guardians" is convoluted in a storyline only comic books, soap operas and bad Sci-Fi could imagine (if you really want to know click here).? Needless to say, it would have be shocking if this is the "Guardians" Marvel is planning on bringing to your local multiplex. And, surprise, they aren't.

Instead, the basis for the new "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie will be the 2008 incarnation that currently lives within the every day Marvel comic book continuity.? This is a group of heroes from across the galaxy who have banded together to fight interstellar crises just like our favorite superhero team The Avengers do back on Earth.? The group's membership has changed somewhat in their brief history and their recent comic is no longer in publication, but Marvel has been keen on exploring the creative possibilities with the group.? Star-Lord, Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Quasar (the female version) appeared on the new cancelled DisneyXD animated series "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes!" this past spring.? A new iteration of the team also just appeared in the comic book "Avengers Assemble" which follows the movie team membership as much as possible. That crew included Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer and Bug. ?

Marvel Studios plans on announcing more details regarding the new "Guardians" movie at San Diego Comic-Con 2012, but division president Kevin Feige hasn't been able to hold back his enthusiasm for the project. During a press conference for "The Avengers" in April, he went on record as saying Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot would be on the team. Whether there will be any other members in the mix is still unclear.? Moreover, Thanos, the secret villain of "The Avengers"?has historical ties to many of the Guardians.? Could he be the villain in a "Guardians"?movie instead of "Avengers 2"?? Curiouser and curiouser isn't it?

Confused?? Don't be.? Marvel and Disney marketing have about two years to educate the global marketplace about talking raccoons and trees.? And, finding an inspired director to handle this space opera won't hurt either. Still, it's never toe early to start learning about these "Space Avengers."?

Click on the gallery below and find out more about Star-Lord, Gamora and other characters who could and should appear in the big screen version of "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Mandel boosts 'AGT's' 'chosen,' blasts Poe

By Randee Dawn

After the season's first live broadcast of "America's Got Talent," judge Howie Mandel may have a good idea as to who will advance closer to the $1 million prize, but he also knows at least one person who's definitely no winner.

"I was appalled," he said when TODAY's Natalie Morales asked him about the deception pulled by contestant Timothy Poe, who claimed armed forces credits and injuries he did not have, and who was voted off the show?last week. "This story at this time in our lives in this country is not something to play with. There are so many heroes out there, and he went from hero to zero in like one night. He doesn't deserve to be on the show."

There's one guy Mandel is happy to have on the show, and that's Howard Stern, who dominated Monday night's show with his opinions. Said Mandel, "I'm thrilled that Howard joined the show this year. I think it's a real asset to our show. I was a little apprehensive, but I gotta say that coming here, we're actually doing (the current live shows) in Newark, the electricity and the energy is far beyond what you could have ever imagined."

Meanwhile, Mandel was delighted by some of the other talent in the room on Monday night. Mandel said he was wowed by several performances, including David Garibaldi & his CMYKs, who painted and danced simultaneously, who he called "amazing"; the father-daughter singing team of Maurice and Shanice Hayes ("she's a star on her own ... I think America's heart's going to go out to them," he said); and he specifically singled out Edon, a 14-year old boy who came out on stage with his synthesizer and wearing a yarmulke (a Jewish head covering), as having "the voice of an angel."?

"You know what, he is 'chosen,'" joked Mandel about Edon's chances of moving forward.

Be sure to tune in Tuesday night at 9 p.m. EST on NBC for the first live round of elimination on "America's Got Talent."

Pele says 1970 Brazil side more gifted than Spain

Spain's national soccer team players celebrate their Euro 2012 victory on a stage in downtown Madrid

By Andrew Downie

updated 3:23 p.m. ET July 4, 2012

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's 1970 World Cup winners contained more gifted individuals than Spain's current all-conquering national side, the Brazilian side's greatest player Pele said on Wednesday.

Asked who would win a showdown between the two teams, Pele flashed a big smile and said: "If I was playing, we'd win, no doubt about it."

"As long as they are comparing teams with the 1970s, it is because the 1970s team is better," he added. "(The) 1970 (team) is the standard by which others are rated."

Spain won the European Championship for the second time in a row on Sunday and, as World Cup Winners in 2010, became the first team in the post-war era to win three successive major international tournaments.

Spain's dominance and possession-based style of play have won them comparisons with the Brazil side of 1970, widely regarded as the greatest ever.

That team, led by Pele and featuring Rivellino, Gerson, Tost?o and Jairzinho, won the World Cup in Mexico, hammering Italy 4-1 in the final.

Pele retired from international football in 1971 and did not go to the World Cup in West Germany in 1974, where a disappointing Brazil side finished fourth.

Pele, 71, said the difference between Brazil then and Spain today was the number of outstanding players on each team. He said Brazil were far superior on a player-by-player basis.

"These comparisons will always be there but you can't compare them individually," he said. "Individually the 1970 team had a lot more better players than Spain, who have two or three excellent players."

Nevertheless, the former Santos and New York Cosmos player lauded the Spaniards and said watching them was a rare pleasure.

"Without a doubt, this Spain side play the football I've most liked to watch over the last couple of generations," he said.

(AP) ? Pumping his arms in victory, Peter Sagan of Slovakia won the crash-marred third stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday as cycling's showcase race returned to its home country.

Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland remained the overall leader for a fourth straight day. The cyclists, following a stretch in Belgium, completed a 122-mile ride from Orchies that featured five small climbs to an uphill finish in the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Sagan won his second stage in his debut Tour by bolting from the splintered pack with less than 300 meters left. He pumped his arms as he crossed the line several lengths ? and one second ? ahead of runner-up Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway and third-place finisher Peter Velits of Slovakia.

Sagan said his gesture ? in which he churned his arms as a runner might ? was a nod to the title character in the film "Forrest Gump."

Overall, Cancellara leads Bradley Wiggins of Britain in second and Sylvain Chavanel of France in third, both seven seconds back. Defending champ Cadel Evans climbed from eighth to seventh place, 17 seconds behind.

With the pack jostling to get up front for the climbs near the finish, there were at least four crashes, including one within the last mile. Several riders also had mechanical troubles or flat tires.

"The group was nervous. Everyone wanted to be up front; there were a lot of crashes," Sagan told France-2 television. "It was a very dangerous stage."

On the trek toward the English Channel, five breakaway riders got out early through northern France's wheat fields and former steel industry hubs, and through medieval villages like Isbergues ? named for a sister of Charlemagne who, legend has it, could cure skin and eye illnesses.

With about 30 miles to go, several riders crashed in a flat portion of road through a wheat field in a slight turn.

Team Sky's Kanstantsin Sivtsov, of Belarus, didn't immediately get up and became the first competitor to drop out of this year's 99th edition of the race.

Some 12 miles later, another crash sent riders flying off the shoulder of the road on both sides ? and one flew into a wire fence. Spain's Jose Joaquin Rojas of Movistar clambered into an ambulance and dropped out, according to organizers. The spill split the pack into mini bunches, and the front group overtook the breakaway riders.

U.S. sprint specialist Tyler Farrar of Garmin-Sharp went down in the first crash and was delayed in the second. He and several teammates rallied together to rejoin the main pack.

Wednesday's fourth stage takes riders on another bumpy ride along several hills, a 134-mile leg from Abbeville to Rouen in the heart of Normandy.

House Based Business Marketing Methods | Business & Finance ...

The number of tools and techniques would you take advantage of for your home based business marketing strategies? Would you limit your home business to only a few marketing techniques? Worse yet, are you trying to teach everybody inside your sales force how to use the exact same home based business marketing method? If you have not entirely learned yet that not everybody is going to be victorious using all the same tools, I invite you to read my preceding post named ? Home based business Marketing ? The Delusion of Replication.

Once you understand why you want to increase your home based business marketing toolbox, the subsequent inquiry is when. Many people don?t offer alternative types of marketing because they either don?t know what is at hand or they don?t comprehend the way to train it. Become familiar with more facts about the miscellaneous options up for grabs and thus you can move profits force to make the appropriate choices for themselves.

Why wouldn?t you give heed to what I?m sharing? For the reason why if you don?t expand your home based business advertising knowledge and allow your group increased plans to function with, they will eventually identify someone which will. To put it plainly, you must give up to go up. Which means not simply sacrificing for the larger target, it indicates you have to be willing to concede that you don?t know everything and you are not good at everything. Your team will appreciate you more in the long run should you hold enough tenacity to be honest with them and point them in the appropriate path with regards to who they may learn anything they like to learn from.

Don?t Overlook These Important Home based business Strategies

Every home based business marketing toolbox ought to involve both offline and online methods. The Truth is, many people like traditional in person marketing, and another group of people favor the internet and telephone. Few people possesses the technical abilities to plunge into online marketing right away. You?ll also function with other people that don?t by and large take to sitting in front of the pc or staying connected to their phone steadily.

Many individuals decide to try communicating in front of a room brimming with people, however innumerable individuals become faint and nauseated just at the idea of public speaking. One home business owner may favor selling merchandise, and the other may enjoy recruiting additional people. You might have a few associates that are unusually proficient at developing advertisement copy, and associates who?ve never drafted an advert within their career. As you can easily see, the formation of your hbb consists of all unique parts which all function in a different manner. It?s your basic reason for creating a multiple method platform.

Examples You might Entertain For Your HBB Promo

The first and many accepted form of Home business marketing is direct marketing. This really is marketing that targets your concise market directing your ideal prospect to assume action, either it?s going to your internet website or phoning you.

Home based business promotion uses both online and traditional methods to exercise such. Offline examples could be snail mail promotions such as postcards, a letter, plus newsletters. Another example could be to use print ads such as newspaper classifieds, bulletins, or magazines. Individuals with a larger advertising budget might work with radio stations as well as TV. Currently I?ve encountered some creative methods like lawn signs (like the ones you see during political campaigns.) Alternative types of conventional strategies are networking meetings, referral organizations, meetup groups, conventions together with trade event booths, drop-boxes or fish bowls and you will not neglect contacting.

Internet options can include but are not limited to: emailing, social networks, submitting articles, promoting videos, PPC, hosting your blog, free classified ads, ezine ads, forums, list builders, and so on. Online strategies employed for home based business marketing can also include online versions of postcards, newsletters, etc.

Home based business marketing is not limited to direct response marketing. Other methods can be applied as well such as reverse marketing and indirect or passive marketing. Regardless of which methods you personally use and teach, I highly advise investigating one method called attraction marketing. In a nutshell, attraction marketing is the method that customers are drawn to you and magnetically need to use you, free of you actually soliciting these to. Attraction marketing ought to be your fundamental approach to operation with any promotion options you use.

Your HBB Advertising Action Plan

Before you take off in ten different directions, there?s something you should know. You can?t be an expert in all hbb advertising strategies. You need to though, come to be well-rounded with regards to what?s actually accessible to make the most of. The main reason you have to do this is so you may point your partners to the best hbb marketing options for them, based on their strengths and gifts.

You become profitable by helping others become victorious. The best way to help more team members prosper is to supply them the options and direction they need suited to their personality. You throw them the football, nonetheless they need to hustle. Your first step is becoming familiar with what?s out there. You don?t have to understand everything. For your own individual victory, concentrate on becoming truly efficient at one thing, and proficient at the remainder.
